The second annual Tendring Youth Awards evening took place on Monday 19th March, 6.00pm in The Atrium, Bishops Park College.

Tendring District Youth Council presented 12 awards, based on 6 themes, and this years event also saw the selection of the first ever Youth Mayor!

Life

 

Young Carer Award

Winner - Tendring Crossroads Young

Carer Group

We have 29 young people in the group and they all play an active caring role within their families.
They all have either a parent or sibling with a disability.

They are all very enthusiastic and dedicated young carers with compassion for others.
In recognition of their caring roles.


Young Achiever

Winner - Tom Jewell
Tom has been training since he was four. He travels from Harwich to Ipswich four nights a week to train for nearly 4 hours. He competes all around the country and is in the British Gymnastics Development Team.
Tom always competes with a level head and tries his hardest, but at the same time is always first to shake the hand of another competitor for a good routine.
The commitment and sportsmanship he is showing is just as important as achievement.
Dedication, commitment and good sportsmanship.

Volunteering Award

Winner - Ricky Street
Over the past 12 months Ricky has developed into a reliable, enthusiastic and supportive member of the 4 youth drop-in centre and his efforts and commitment deserve recognition.
In January Ricky demonstrated valuable qualities of kindness and caring to a new member at the centre who suffers from cerebral palsy. Ricky is working towards gaining a UK Youth Award.
A great role model to his peer group; showing it can be cool, fun and rewarding to volunteer in the community.


Commitment Award

Winner - Ben Chandler

Ben has been a devoted member of Clacton Sea Cadets for nearly four years. He has gained several promotions and is currently an Able Cadet.
He attends all fund raising events and has attained many personal achievements including ‘Cadet of the Year.’

A bright, genuine and committed young man, he is also involved with the Sea Cadet Band where he plays the drum and is a member of the guard.

Sporting Individual Award

Winner - Sally Bond
Sally has worked hard to win her place on the youth team in the Australian Youth Festival of Sport this year. She won gold in Olympic skeet shooting.
She is a sports ambassador for Tendring and is working hard to encourage others to do their best in sport as we head for 2012.
Sally is a true sporting champion, modest, mature and successful.


Sporting Team Award

Winner - Harwich School Yr 10 Basketball Team
This group of boys, led by a very enthusiastic teacher has rarely been beaten at basketball in the past four years.
They are a cohesive group who compete and socialise together. At an age when many teenage boys spiral into trouble they have stayed focused and supportive of each other.
They have recently won the coastal schools basketball championship. A team to look out for in the future!

Young Voice Award

Winner - Holly Barrett
Holly is a responsible and caring young girl who is a positive role model for other young people. This award recognises the contributions she makes to the community and will allow her to grow in confidence.
She always puts others before herself and tries to influence positive changes locally.
Holly is a caring, responsible young girl with a positive vision for the future.


School Council Award

Winner - Coppins Green School Council
The school council has been involved with helping the school achieve healthy school status by conducting surveys, interviews and asking other children their ideas.
It is really important for any school to have an active school council, and the school councillors there really achieve that by their efforts and contributions to the whole school.
Coppins Green School Council is involved successfully in all aspects of the school.

Young Individual Arts Award

Winners - Brooke Wakefield & Sadie Mills

Brooke and Sadie have been working hard for the past five months ballroom dancing and won the Spring Meadow Primary School talent show this year with style.

Two inspirational young girls who are bursting with ballroom dancing talent!


Young Team Arts Award

Winner - Cann Hall Primary School Choir
They are a dedicated choir who always represent the school in a sensible and mature manner. As well as performances within school, they visit a residential home for the elderly at Christmas, participate in the annual Town Hall Choir Day and have worked successfully with other schools.
The choir make a valuable contribution to school life and the wider community in a sensible and responsible way.

Young Leader Award

Winner - Claire Hodgson
Claire always works hard with enthusiasm and is a positive head girl at Colbayns High School. Organising events, going for the ‘Gold Duke of Edinburgh's Award’ and helping other students around the school. She is always very good with both students and staff.
Claire is a bright, talented girl with great potential and prospects for her future.


Enterprise Award

Winner - James Burfoot
James is dedicated to Clacton County High School radio station. He has built a dynamic team and helped create a strong vision for his school's media department. James is committed to using his skills for good.
James has clear vision which inspires others to succeed.

Tendring Youth Mayor

Tendring District Youth Council selected its first ever youth mayor. James Burfoot, who won the title, impressed the judges with his enthusiasm in and round the local community. His outstanding involvement with many groups in Tendring has seen him become a local celeb!
