Tendring Youth Councillors took to the slopes for a days skiing at Suffolk Ski Centre. This is part of the ongoing member development training which is to boost confidence, team work and the ability to learn new skills which make up part of a youth councillors role. It was an extremely successful day with the young people learning from mistakes, helping each other out and being able to makes decisions at a moments notice.

Being a part of the community is essential for any leading organisation when it comes to children and young people. Tendring District Youth Council likes to lead by example and by doing this creates a platform in which others can learn to take pride and confidence in what they do. We decided to sponsor the Colbayns Community Centre summer fete which managed to attract over 200 people young and old. We empowered centre staff and volunteers to action plan and deliver the day with huge success and confidence.

TDYC splashed out on an adventure weekend for its most committed youngsters. TDYC and the Older Childrens Group for Tendring funded the event in Harlow to give youngsters a chance to show their positive side.

The 20 young people were choosen for their commitment to the community. It sent out a positive message to other young people that if you contribute your skills to different activities, your achievements will be recognized by the wider community. It also helps to give a positive message about young people in the community.


Danbury Outdoor Challenge for Youth Leaders

United by politics, youth council members spent a grueling three days at Danbury Outdoor Education Centre. The youngsters from TDYC completed team challenges such canoeing, high ropes, mountain biking and the assult course. The aim of the camp was to develop the youngsters communication skills.

October 2007 brought members together for are AGM/Residential which was held at Thorrington Scout Camp. Youth Councillors were given tasks and activities to complete and for them to evaluate the work achieved throughout the past year.


Holland Haven

Primary School Circus

Making a Positive Contribution

 

Holland Haven Primary School was awarded £9,300 to bring a big top to town. The children got the chance to learn circus skills, when the Cirque de Normandy arrived.

Workshops to teach the children circus skills enablesd100 of them to take part in performances. The Circus skills help with coordination, behaviour, science and maths. As well as confidence building and team awareness.

TDYC bought the first 50 tickets from its special projects fund to get the ticket sales underway.


Clacton Hospital Campaign

Staying Healthy


Campaigning young people took to the streets in an effort to protect health facilities.

In just 2 hours they collected 500 signatures from shoppers in Clacton town centre.
Supporting the Clacton Gazettes campaign ‘Lets Make it Better by Letting Our Community Be Heard’ TDYC are working across the generation gap with Tendring Pensioners Action Group, to save local hospital services.

Campaigners pointed out that the bus service to the Colchester hospital was inadequate, and that the influx of holiday makers needed on the spot treatment.

TDYC members also collected signatures in Frinton and Walton and have collected more than 1,000 signatures in the three towns.


Trek Boosts Funds for Jordan

Tendring District Youth Council has put its weight behind a 12 year old boy who need a new wheel chair. Jordan Aldis of Gorse Lane in Great Clacton, suffers from Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

He has outgrown his current wheelchair and needs £12,000 for a new specialised electric model which will support his back and give him more independence.

TDYC started to fundraise for the Joy for Jordan fund, and Stephen Mayzes of TDYC said “young people shouldn’t have to pay for their own wheelchairs, we want to show him that we will take action and we are looking out for him.”

TDYC are organizing events including a Walk, Roll and Skate event to raise funds.

To date they have raised £590.00.To donate to the appeal you can visit HSBC in Station Road Clacton and quote the ‘Joy for Jordan Fund.’

James Burfoot, and 18 year old Radio presenter has become Tendrings first ever youth mayor.
