Did you know TDYC is the only independent Youth Council in the UK!

TDYC is a group of children and young people who want to make a positive contribution to the local community in which they live and grow-up in. They meet every two weeks at Bishops Park College to discuss the issues that affect them the most.

Liam feels the best way to improve things locally is to be proactive and to become involved with TDYC and that's what he done. Now he works with other young people aged 8 - 12 who work alongside the 12 - 16's who all make up TDYC.

These are the youngsters who lead the vision of TDYC in principle and in practice. Their aim is to champion the voices of children and young people.

What is Tendring District Youth Council? (TDYC)

TDYC is a non-political, non-profitable, publicly elected Local Youth Council. (Publicly elected meaning its elected members are voted to office by young people aged 8-16.)

TDYC is a Full Member of the British Youth Council (BYC).

Young people are an important part of society, yet invariably they are not seen as important when it comes to listening to their views and allowing them a chance to input into decisions that affect their lives.

The main aim of TDYC is to provide a voice for young people to influence, direct and change issues that affect them locally. Enabling a two-way dialogue and engagement with decision- makers and service providers.

Local Youth Councils enable young people to become active citizens in their local community; playing a role in developing and improving their community to the benefit of not only young people but wider society.

What is the British Youth Council? (BYC)

The BYC is the National Youth Council in the UK. They represent and involve a unique coalition of young people through Local Youth Councils.

BYC’S unique coalition includes national youth organisations such as Girlguiding UK and the Scouts, as well as campaigning organisations such as the National Union of Students (NUS) and youth wings of trade unions and political parties.

All the three major political parties and central government support and endorse the BYC.

How Tendring District Youth Council operates

TDYC meets as a full youth council every 2 weeks. All members are given a rank, Youth Councillor or Youth Council Member. The Youth Council is entirely operated by young people aged 8-16 but we do have a Board made up of Councillors, Parents and Independent Members who give advise where needed.

(We are completely independent and in no context associated with Tendring District Council.)

For further information please refer to the constitution and operating guidelines.

Membership Performance Review

The senior management team carries out Membership Performance Reviews to ensure members are given adequate and correct training, that they are satisfied with the running of the youth council and to given them general feedback for there efforts as a Youth Councillor. Members receive at least one review a year and additional ones when required.

A TDYC Meeting

Members gather at the main reception where they have a chance to catch up with one another on the week’s highlights.

At 6pm members make there way to the boardroom or main atrium where the meeting begins. Firstly if you are a new member you will be welcomed by all the friendly faces.

We then start something called matters arising where all members get the chance to share stories of interest or things they are concerned about, like the traffic outside their school or an environmental issue.

All our members talk about a huge range of local issues so it can vary from week to week what is discussed.

During break members get the chance to network with other members and talk about common issues.

After having a drink and snack members get to work on a communications exercise or team building game which sees members share ideas and work out solutions to problems and issues.

The meeting ends with any other news and homework. Members meet parents back at the main reception to share there achievements and outcomes of attending TDYC.
